Gene Farmer, A.I.A., N.C.A.R.B., LEED-AP BD+C

Gene Farmer is president of Gene Farmer and Associates, Architects and Planners, an award winning
architecture firm. He has over thirty years of experience in the design and management of construction of
numerous residential and commercial projects in Florida, Texas, Illinois and Minnesota. His work has been
published both locally and nationally and he has received numerous awards including two F.A.M.E. awards and
the prestigious Price Waterhouse South Florida Business Journal "Up and Comer Award for 1990".
Mr. Farmer holds a license to practice architecture in the State of Florida, an N.C.A.R.B. Certification, a LEED-AP
BD+C certification, a Dade County Sub-Builder Certificate, and is a certified International Building Code
Congress International (IBC) Building Inspector and has been a certified OSHA 500 instructor. He has served
as an expert witness in numerous cases ranging from construction defects to construction claims analysis.
In addition, Gene Farmer is an Associate Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Program in the OHL
School of Construction, in the College of Engineering at Florida International University. His teaching
specialties include Principals of Construction Management, Building Construction Materials, Sustainable
Construction, Building Codes, Quality Control in Construction, and Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing
Systems in Buildings. As Director of the Undergraduate Program, he is responsible for the coordination of all
undergraduate curriculum with respect to college, university and national accreditation criteria.
He is actively involved in both research and writing, with research proposal topics ranging from building code
enforcement issues to construction materials and techniques. Professor Farmer has been involved as
principal or co-principal investigator in approximately $300,000.00 in funded research. In addition to his book
entitled Architectural Detailing for Commercial Construction, published by McGraw Hill in 1991, he has a
second book entitled "Contractor's Guide to LEED Certified Construction" which was published by Delmar
Cengage in early 2012. Professor Farmer also has numerous articles published in a variety of construction
related publications and peer reviewed journals.
In 1994, Professor Farmer produced and hosted a weekly one hour television show entitled "Construction
Today". This program showcased construction materials and techniques used in South Florida. In 1995,
Professor Farmer was responsible for developing and delivering all of the continuing education required for
Miami-Dade County's 650 building inspectors, processors and building officials. He is currently coordinating a
Certificate in Construction Management for the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Authority.
Professor Farmer’s research interests range from construction career awareness to hurricane shutter
effectiveness research. In 1995 Mr. Farmer was co-director of a program designed to develop and implement
the continuing education program for the Miami-Dade County Office of Building Code Compliance.
